چکیده

This paper presents a new approach fur the description of directional textures based on the stady of their orientation and cuherence fields. We apply the featurebased interaction maps to the characterization of an orientation field. The features are extracted from orientation spatial difference histograms. The representation of a feature, as a ftinctiun of the spacing vector used to compute the spatial statistics, yields a Z-D interaction map which can be used to assess the structural layout of texture. Orientation-based interaction maps are exercised on original and distorted Brudatz textures. The results show the relevance and the robustness of the approach fur the description of directional textures. tures can be addressed by means of their orientation field. The aim of the present article is to use the orientation field in order to retrieve the structural layout of directional textures. Our approach is based on spatial difference statistics of the orientation field. It applies the feature-based interaction maps, initially introduced in the framework of grey level based texture analysis (e.g. [3]), to the description of an orientation field. This paper will organize as follows: in section 2, we will briefly discuss orientation estimation methods and related issues. Then, in section 3, we will introduce the orientation difference histograms from which the descriptive features are derived. Finally, section 4 will present the orientation-based interaction maps, which are applied to the characterization of natural textures. 2. The Orientation Field

Significantly Different Textures: A Computational Model of Pre-attentive Texture Segmentation

Recent human vision research [1] suggests modelling preattentive texture segmentation by taking a set of feature samples from a local region on each side of a hypothesized edge, and then performing standard statistical tests to determine if the two samples differ significantly in their mean or variance. If the difference is significant at a specified level of confidence, a human observer will t...

Orientation Based Second-Order Statistics for Texture Description

This paper focuses on directional textures and proposes a new statistical approach for the second order description of an orientation vector field. We tackle two of the main high level properties that drive the perceptual grouping of texture: directionality and periodicity. Our method is based on the measure of similarity between two orientation vectors separated by a given displacement. We pro...

Discrimination of orientation-defined texture edges

Preattentive texture segregation was examined using textures composed of randomly placed, oriented line segments. A difference in texture element orientation produced an illusory, or orientation-defined, texture edge. Subjects discriminated between two textures, one with a straight texture edge and one with a "wavy" texture edge. Across conditions the orientation of the texture elements and the...

A Parametric Texture Model based onJoint Statistics of Complex Wavelet

We present a universal statistical model for texture images in the context of an over-complete complex wavelet transform. The model is parameterized by a set of statistics computed on pairs of coeecients corresponding to basis functions at adjacent spatial locations , orientations, and scales. We develop an eecient algorithm for synthesizing random images subject to these constraints, by iterat...

Contrasting the processes of texture segmentation and discrimination with static and phase-reversing stimuli

Regions of visual texture can be automatically segregated from one another when they abut but also discriminated from one another if they are separated in space or time. A difference in mean orientation between two textures serves to facilitate their segmentation, whereas a difference in orientation variance does not. The present study further supports this notion, by replicating the findings o...
